We live in an "official" red squirrel area, even though the nearest reds are over 5 miles away. There are grey squirrels living wild in our woodland a mile from the sanctuary. We were brought a baby hand-reared grey squirrel a couple of months ago. It is illegal to keep one without a license from Natural England. It is also illegal to release one, allow one to escape, or to kill one, without a license from Natural England. We needed to build an enclosure which met their exact standards - which were very very precise. We were given just 6 weeks to comply..... and today were were inspected. WE PASSED!!! Stephen the Squirrel is safe in his purpose-built, DEFRA Quality enclosure, and we have permission to keep him. If others come along, we will need an upgrade to the licence, but we celebrate today because we've done it!!

Here is a photo of little Stephen tucking in to his dinner. We try to give him as natural and varied a diet as possible. He particularly likes pine cones, clover flowers and seeded grasses, although various nuts and dried fruit are high on his list of favourites.
