firstly hi everyone i havent been on here for ages..... i have just got back from making my deliveries and on the way back i spotted the most enormous spider web in a hedge. i stopped and got out to have a closer look. the web covered about 15 feet of this hedge and was on the outside of it. it looked very sticky and thoroughly nasty lol !! it was almost like a huge cobweb but it had like little entrance holes going in to it ( or was this where unfortunate birds had flown into it ?? ) i tried to tap it with a stick but i couldnt reach over the ditch between the road and hedge so i chucked a couple of stones into it to see if anything moved half expecting something to grab me by the leg and drag me in lol !! so does anyone know what might have made this thing, i cant stand spiders so thought i was being rather brave, i've still got goosebumps yuk ! it's not like anything i've ever seen before not even when i lived in australia.

Hi Rose, I've been on the net looking for large Spider Webs, but to no avail I'm afraid, since I lost the old yahoo group, I also lost one or two valuable members on there that may have been able to provide us with an answer to your question I'll keep looking, but in the meantime do you have a camera you can take a picture of it? if so then I'd suggest putting something in front of it, to give it some scale, i.e: a 12 inch ruler, a traffic cone or something, but please be very wary, I wouldn't want anything to happen to you. If you're unsure though, please don't venture there, I'll come over and you can show me. Chris

i know the reply is bit late but only just joined!! Many UK spiders will actively expand their nests and belong to a group called "sheet web" spiders. They are totally harmless.

Thanks for that Waz,
As they say, "Better late than never" it's nice to have someone with us who can identify these things.
Much appreciated.
Chris
