I have just returned from a visit to Cumbria where a friend of mine related the story of an encounter with a big cat:
A couple of months back he was driving at night between Broughton Moor and the A594 Junction when he slowed for what he first thought was a big black dog lying in the road near Hennah Hall. To his surpise as he started to drive slowly around the animal he realised it was a large cat. He reported that it didn't move but looked at him with yellow eyes and as he drew level it bared its teeth and snarled at him through the car window. His emotions were surprise, fear and admiration for what he saw as a beautiful but evil animal. He reported its size as "bigger than a large alsatian" and after checking internet photographs decided that it was a panther.
He talked to his father about the sighting who confirmed that he had also seen the panther in exactly the same place.
I find it worrying that such a dangerous animal should be so unafraid of human beings that it not only stands its ground but behaves aggressivley towards them - mostly these animals stay well clear of humans but this one seems to want humans to keep out of its way (if not stay for dinner). My friend says now that he will never walk the roads at night or cycle on what is part of the Cumbrian Cycle Way

It could have been that the car headlights had startled the animal.
