I adore birds, don't get to see them as I would like as I live in liverpool, a busy noisy city! However, they are about the city if you look. As I was walking to work the other day, a bird of prey swooped past me and very deftly landed on what I think was a blackbird. Couldn't get too close. It was an amazing sight to see as it happened in quite a built up area. I haven't seen it happen as such close range before. What was the bird of prey likely to have been ? A Sparrowhawk? I surley wished my camera was with me that day. Was gobsmacked!

The "books" will tell you that sparrowhawks and kestrals don't take birds as big as a blackbird, but I've seen a kestral take a blackbird.Did it have short broad wings (sparrowhawk) or long thin wings (kestral)?

Thank you for replying. It was definatly a Blackbird that was caught, and I would say the bird of prey had long thin wings. Was quite a big bird. It just struck me how swiftly and easily it caught it's prey in such a confined space. I haven't had time to look pics up on the net yet, but I will do. Thank you for your reply.

Squirrel.
I go along with Mike on this, the two birds which came to my mind was Sparrowhawk and Kestral, I'm afraid the person who knows a little regards our birds of prey is having a lot of problems with her computer right now, and is offline altogether.
