I have only just found this site, and I am no expert on wildlife (even British Wildlife) in my defense I grew up in inner city Liverpool. However, last February I saw a strange looking bird sitting on my front fence, ( I now live in the suburbs) it looked to be about 10" to 12" tall with a light brown body and wings with a blue/green stripe on them, If I remember rightly the tail was black and white, and it had a beak that was about 3" long. It flew to the back of the house as I came through the front gate, as I ran through the house I grabbed the camera and managed to get some blurred photos, although you can see the shape of the bird and the colouring I mentioned, I am trying to post the picture but my lack of wildlife knowledge is comparable to my lack of IT skills, but I will keep trying, if anyone wants me to email them the pictures I may be able to do that. I have looked at some bird pictures on the net, and the closest I have seen is a Kookaburra, but I thought they were Australian, if anyone can help with an identification of this I would appreciate it.
Thanks.

I read somewhere that the majority of "funny birds" described by people in Britain are either jays or green woodpeckers. This is without any shadow of a doubt a jay. Jays are quite common birds, but not seen as often as other crows because they tend to stick to forests.
Without wanting to sound at all rude, the best place to look for birds you see in Britain is a British field guide!

I'm inclined to agree with the others on this, it does remarkably look like a Jay, there's proberbly some fruit (berries) baring trees near to you.
However keep up the good work looking out, you never know what you mind find and please don't be dispondant regards misidentifications, I can definately see where you were coming from and if you'd never seen a Jay before, it would have you wondering.
